Author, academician Srutimala Duara passes away

In 2016 Duara received the "Woman of the Year" award from the International Human Rights Council, Assam Chapter

Author, academician, and actor Srutimala Duara passed away in Guwahati on February 27. As per report, she breathed her last at around 11:15 a.m. She was diagnosed with cancer few years ago.

She was an associate professor and head of the English department of Handique Girls College, Guwahati.

Srutimala Duara belonged to one of the leading families of Assam. She was the grand- daughter of Nijora Kobi Sailadhar Rajkhowa (one of Assam’s eminent poet and writer) and her parents were eminent academicians of the state. Her father late Bhuban Mohan Das was the Head of Anthropology department, Gauhati University. He had also served as the Vice Chairman of Srimanta Sanrkardev Kalakshetra, Guwahati and her mother Manjumala Das was the Head of Assamese Department, Handique College, Guwahati. Srutimala was also Chairperson, Ficci Ladies Organisation (FLO).

On November 2022 Duara released her book ‘My Journey through cancer’. The book was about how she fought cancer.

She was awarded the “Naari Shakti Award” by Lions Club in April 2015. In 2016, she received the “Woman of the Year” award from the International Human Rights Council, Assam Chapter.
