The NPF is led by Kuzholuzo Nienu in the Assembly. He has won four consecutive elections from the Phek seat to the Nagaland Assembly. He initially took the position in the 2003 elections and held it in 2008, 2013, and 2018. He served as a minister in the TR Zeliang-led administration. The Naga People’s Front (NPF) won 26 seats in the 2018 Nagaland election, making it the single largest party in the Assembly. However, the BJP established a coalition with the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and the Janata Dal (United) and took power. Even though the NPF also joined the ruling coalition in 2021, it now faces difficulties as a result of the defection of 21 of its MLAs to the NDPP last year. The NDPP-BJP partnership is still in place, and the NPF is contesting alone in the upcoming elections. Only four NPF MLAs are with the party and Kuzholuzo Nienu is being one of them. He is contesting against Kupota Khesoh of the NDPP and Zacilhu Ringa Vadeo of Congress.
