Taditui Rangkau Zeliang, a 70-year-old former Chief Minister of Nagaland, has played a significant role in the state’s politics for the past 20 years. He is a seven-time MLA who won his first Assembly elections in 1989. From 2004 to 2008, he served as a Rajya Sabha MP. Zeliang was a Cabinet minister in the SC Jamir-led administration and was previously a member of Congress. He quit Congress in 2003 and established the Nagaland Congress. After then, his party joined the Naga People’s Front (NPF). When Neiphiu Rio resigned in 2014 to become a Lok Sabha MP, Zeliang initially took over as CM. In 2021, the NPF participated in yet another manoeuvre by joining the BJP-NDPP coalition to establish an opposition-free government in an effort to find a resolution to the Naga political dilemma. Zeliang, while in NPF, defeated Iherie Ndang of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) in 2018. In 2022, Zeliang defected with a group of 21 NPF MLAs and joined the NDPP. In the upcoming election, Zeliang is contesting against Kingudi Joseph of the Naga People’s Front.
