Assam: ULFA-I cadre surrenders to join mainstream

A cadre of the United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I) identified as Bikramjit Chetia alias Ranjit Asom has surrendered today to join the mainstream.

Bikramjit Chetia who had joined ULFA-I in July 2019, had deserted the militant outfit’s camp and had indicated his willingness to return to the mainstream, said sources.

Chetia was received by the Officer-in-Charge of Chabua police station near the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border in Tinsukia district.

Later, he has been brought to Dibrugarh and is currently under police custody.

Recently, one of its top self-styled field commanders identified as Uttam Lahon alias Uday Axom who was also an IED expert was neutralised by the Assam police during an encounter in Tinsukia

The encounter of Uday Ahom was seen as a big success for the state police as the former was instrumental in running the outfit’s extortion activities in Eastern Assam, police said.
