While it was the Day 2 of eviction at the Bura Chapori Wildlife sanctuary, a fresh eviction drive was carried out at Digboi in Eastern Assam's Tinsukia district.
The Assam government has intensified the drive to evict illegal settlers on government land.
While it was the Day 2 of eviction at the Bura Chapori Wildlife sanctuary, a fresh eviction drive was carried out at Digboi in Eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district.
Chaotic scenes were witnessed at Bogapani locality under Digboi police station in Tinsukia district, after security forces had to resort to baton-charge after the illegal settlers attempted to block the eviction drive by the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) this morning.
If reports are to be believed, several people sustained injuries during the clash with the security forces.
According to reports, a notice of eviction was issued previously, but the residents had obtained a stay order from a magitrate to postpone the eviction drive by a few days.
However, things escalated to a new high when the administration refused to pay heed to the request of the locals, who had sought for more time to clear the land. If that was not all, children were used as shields in an attempt to stop the eviction drive by the administration.
Meanwhile, settlers in the encroached land plots alleged that no notices were served to them prior for clearing the land and have threatened to hit the streets if the eviction drive does not stop.
It may be mentioned that the Sonitpur district administration is on a mission to evict illegal settlers who had encroached upon 5976 bighas of land at the Bura Chapori Wildlife Sanctuary. Dramatic scenes were witnessed as the illegal settlers opposed eviction and confronted with the security forces as well as the district administration.
Around 2,513 households with 11,610 people were residing in the encroached area.
