Special court convicts Mizoram CM Zoramthanga’s younger brother

Special Court (Prevention of Corruption Act) in Aizawl convicted 6 people, including younger brother of Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga in connection with bogus receipt of compensation, on Tuesday.

Special judge HTC Lalrinchhana pronounced judgment and convicted C. Vanlalchhuana, Saiaithanga, C. Rokhumi, Lalduhawma and P.C. Lalthazovi, all of them residents of Aizawland K. Lalrawna of Myanmar border Champhai town.

Lalrinchhana convicted the 6 people under sections 420/467/468/471 and 120B of the Indian Penal Code for receiving compensation by conspiracy in falsifying land passes, making fake village council land passes, cheating the authorities to receive compensation.

C. Vanlalchhuana, a resident of Electric locality in Aizawl is the younger brother of the state chief minister.

All the six convicted persons received compensation to the tune of lakhs of rupees in acquisition of lands submerged in the construction of 60-megawatt Tuirial Hydeo Electric Project undertaken by the North East Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) Ltd.

The court acquitted two other accused – the then assistant deputy commissioner (ADC) of Aizawl district and present director of the state Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation (UD and PA) H. Lianzela and Lalrinsanga of Saipum village in Assam border Kolasib district as CBI, the investigating agencyfailed to prove their guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

The bail and bonds of the convicted persons were cancelled by the court and were sent to jail on Tuesday to be produced before the court on Wednesday.
