The Centre has finally broken its silence on the Citizenship Bill Issue.

As student groups across the region under the banner of Northeast Students Organisation have stepped up their campaign against the proposed Citizenship Amendment Bill, the Centre today said it would not do anything that would undermine the interests of the indigenous people of the region.

Talking to newsmen in New Delhi today, Union Minister of state for Home Kiren Rijiju assured that the interests of the various local groups and communities will not be undermined at any cost.

Rijiju said that the BJP-led government at the Centre was clear about protecting national interest first adding that political interests can be taken care of later.

He also said that the views of the Joint Parliamentary Committee would be critical in arriving at any decision on the Citizenship Amendment Bill.
