Assam: Speeding train hits elephant in Jorhat, drags it for 50 m, dies

Another incident of elephant death has been reported from Assam. A 6-7-year-old elephant lost its life after it was hit by a speeding train near Mariani’s Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary in Jorhat, Assam on Wednesday night. The elephant was hit when it was crossing the railway track.

On Wednesday evening, the elephant observation team notified the Tinsukia control room that there was elephant movement near the train track.

As per reports, the train was running faster than its speed limit of is 20 km per hour. After hitting the elephant, the train dragged the jumbo for about 50 metres.

Due to negligence of the railway department, many such incidents of speeding trains hitting elephants have been reported in Assam earlier.

On October 9, a female elephant and her 10 month old calf died after being hit by a train in Assam’s Jorhat district.
