Alleged violation of Indian airspace by Myanmar Army: Mizo bodies submit memo to HM Shah

The memo said Myanmar warplanes not only violated Indian airspace but also dropped and exploded bombs inside the Indian territory of Mizoram

Mizoram’s NGO Coordination Committee (NGOCC), a conglomerate of major voluntary organizations, civil society organizations, and student bodies, submitted a memorandum to Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Thursday to take proactive action on the issue of alleged violation of Indian airspace by the Myanmar air force.

The NGOCC expressed deep concern over the breach of Indian territory and the dropping of bombs inside the Indian territory of Mizoram by Myanmar’s Tatmadaw during its airstrikes against pro-democracy forces along the Indo-Myanmar border on January 10 and 11.

The memorandum said Myanmar warplanes not only violated Indian airspace but also dropped and exploded bombs inside the Indian territory of Mizoram.

The bombardment of Indian soil for two days caused a feeling of insecurity for the people living along the border areas, the civil society organisations said.

The NGOCC said that it condemned the Myanmar army for not confining its military action within its own land and using the Indian side to suppress democratic forces in Myanmar.

It urged the Indian government to speak and act in defence of its citizens and ensure that the Indian territory of Mizoram, either on land or in the air, is vigilantly safeguarded from potential military intrusions.

“It is our hope and prayer that the government of India will take the initiative to prevent any other occurrence of bombardment of innocent citizens along the international border in the future,” the memorandum said.

It also said that, as the different Chin tribes in Myanmar are the blood-related tribes of the Zo ethnic stock, the people of Mizoram deeply sympathise with the inhumane sufferings and human rights violations caused by the ongoing political crisis in Myanmar.

“India, as the world’s largest democratic country, should not be a silent spectator to the ongoing human rights violations and inhumane treatment of innocents in its immediate neighbor,” the memorandum said, adding, “We urge the government of India to champion humanity by shouldering the responsibility of safeguarding and protecting the human rights of the people of its neighbour.”

The NGOCC also demanded that the centre take initiatives to bring peace to the neighbouring country, where the military junta would engage all political parties, different ethnic insurgent groups, and all other stakeholders for the return of peace and normalcy in the neighbouring country.
