The deceased was found dead inside 'The Winners Home' located at Wakha foothills of Nongmaijing hillock in Imphal East.

The mysterious death of an inmate at a rehabilitation centre has triggered shock in Manipur’s Imphal East. Family members who have been left in utter disblief about the death of 40-year old Nongombam Sanjoy Meitei, have alleged foul play behind the incident. The deceased was found dead inside ‘The Winners Home’ located at Wakha foothills of Nongmaijing hillock in Imphal East.

Family members and locals are suspecting foul play since the inmate was completely healthy and fit when he was admitted. N. Sanjib Meitei, elder brother of the deceased said that they were informed yesterday morning about the death of his brother.

He alleged there were bruises and injury marks on his face, and maintained that possibility of murder cannot be ruled out since there was a past conflict between his brother and one elder brother of the proprietor of the rehab home.

It has been informed by family members, that Sanjoy was a ‘Meitei Pung’ player and occasionally consumed alcohol. However, Sanjoy had requested them to keep him in a rehab centre since he wanted to give up drinking. Subsequently, he was admitted to the rehab on January 15.

Meanwhile, a Joint Action Committee has been formed and a memorandum has been submitted to local MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan pressing for delivery of justice.
