Mizoram election department officials have deleted 3,989 names of Bru voters from the state voters’ lists till date, a senior state election official said.
They said that the Tripura state election commission has sent 3,610 names of Bru voters through ERONet for corresponding deletion.
“While 3,599 names of Bru voters, out of 3,610 deletion requests received have been deleted, 390 names of Bru voters have also been deleted, based on scanned names received from Tripura,” officials said.
He said that 7,651 Bru names were still to be deleted, which would be done after their names are enrolled in the Tripura electoral rolls by the Tripura state election commission and sent to the Mizoram election department through ERONet.
Three assembly constituencies in Mizoram-Tripura-Bangladesh border Mamit district—Hachhek, Mamit, and Dampa—have the maximum number of Bru voters, where 3,088 names have so far been deleted out of 3,099 names sent by the Tripura state election commission with corresponding deletion requests through the ERONet.
Officials said that Mamit district election officials have been having technical problems in the deletion process, while the sending of deletion requests through the ERONet by the Tripura state election commission was also conducted at a snail’s pace.
Deletion of Bru voters from Mizoram voters’ lists could commence after an agreement was signed on January 2020, between the centre, Mizoram and Tripura state governments, and Bru organisations in the relief camps.
The agreement stipulated that the Brus, who were in Tripura relief camps and refused to return to Mizoram despite several attempts to repatriate them, would be allowed to settle in Tripura and should be enrolled on the Tripura electoral rolls.
