The emergence of the new COVID situation in the nation seems to have snowballed into a political issue in Assam. At a time when the government agencies are making all out efforts to deal with the situation, political leaders in the state, especially the Opposition Congress has cried foul over the entire situation.

First, it was Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Debabrata Saikia who launched a scathing jibe at the BJP-led Centre and the state government. Saikia is alleging that it may be a conspiracy to impact the ongoing Bharat Jodo Yatra carried out across the nation by the grand old party.

Saikia said,”This may be a conspiracy because it (Bharat Jodo) is likely to reach Delhi soon. So this may be a conspiracy. They (BJP) had said (in terms of Assam) only skeletons will be left till the Bharat Jodo from Dhubri reaches Sadiya, but no such thing has happened.”

However, the Congress leader maintained that prevention must always be the priority.

Next, to follow suit was North Karimganj Congress MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, who went a step ahead to criticize the government. According to Purkayastha, the BJP is worried over the acceptance of Congress and Rahul Gandhi among the people. He added, “It has been proved, because whenever Congress does something, COVID restrictions are imposed. Efforts are being made to stop the Congress (Bharat Jodo Yatra) and change the perception towards Rahul Gandhi.”

AIUDF MLA Rafikul Islam wants scientists, doctors as well as experts must pitch in and establish the truth for the benefit of the common people.

AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam too echoed similar sentiments and said that no controversy must be created. Aminul Islam feels that the issue must not be politicized, nor it should be looked into from a political angle. “This is concerned with the health of the people, so the situation must be dealt from the public health perspective,” Aminul Islam added.
