J Beikiasa, Lalrosanga and Lalremthanga – voted in favour of the no-confidence motion on Nov 25 toppling the 6-month old Cong-MNF rule in MADC

Three Mizo National Front (MNF) members of district council (MDCs), who were instrumental in the BJP toppling the Congress-MNF coalition government in Mara Autonomous District Council (MADC) left the MNF party.

The Congress-MNF coalition government at the MADC was voted out of power in a no-confidence motion moved by the BJP on November 25.

Three MNF MDCs – J Beikiasa, Lalrosanga and Lalremthanga – voted in favour of the no-confidence motion, resulting in the downfall of the 6-month old Congress-MNF rule. The three MDCs submitted their resignation from the party primary membership to the MNF President Zoramthanga (Chief Minister) on Monday.

They said that they left the party following appeals from the major civil societies and student organization in the MADC. They also stated that political instability in the MADC compelled them to support the BJP in order to end the sufferings of the people due to political uncertainty.

Election to the 25-member MADC was held on May 5, for which the result was announced on May 9. Though the ruling BJP emerging as the largest party by bagging 12 seats, one seat short of a simple majority, the result was a fragmented mandate. The MNF secured 9 seats and the Congress managed to get 4 seats resulting in days of political uncertainty in the MADC.

The Congress and the MNF finally agreed to form the government with H. Malvina of the Congress elected as CEM and MNF leader HC Lalmalsawma Zasai as Deputy CEM during the last part of May. The post-poll alliance between the two arch rivals in the state politics created quite a furore with the Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) strongly against the liaison.
