Assam’s traditionally woven ‘Gamosa’ gets GI tag. What is GI Tag and why is it important?

A proud moment for Assam. Government of India granted Assam’s pride, Gamosa, the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag- meaning, the Gamocha will now get legal protection to prevent its unauthorised use. Gamosa is a integral symbol of Assamese glory.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed joy and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for always giving a place of prestige to this integral symbol of Assamese glory.

@narendramodi Ji for always giving a place of prestige to this integral symbol of Assamese glory. Congratulations Assam,” CM Sarma tweeted.

Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal also took to Twitter and wrote, “Assam’s Pride, Shining Bright – Due recognition of our heritage & cultural identity. Gamosa gets the GI tag, bringing joy to thousands of weavers of this special item that has become a global symbol of Assam.”

The application for the GI tag was filed by the Institute of Handicraft Development of Golaghat district in October 16, 2017.

Notably, the Gamocha is one of the unique identities of Assamese society. The handloom product is held in high esteem and is widely used in Assamese culture.

What is a geographical indication (GI)?

A geographical indication (GI) is a label applied to goods with a particular geographic origin and characteristics or a reputation derived from that origin. An indication that a product is made in a certain location is necessary for a sign to be considered a GI. It is kind of a registered trademark for the product.

Who gives the GI Tag?

GI tags are issued as per the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act,1999. This tag is issued by the Geographical Indication Registry under the Department of Industry Promotion and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
