After receiving much flak over the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in Guwahati from the organisations of the Brahmaputra Valley, the Joint Parliamentary Committee was greeted by placards in support of the proposed legislation in Silchar.
The JPC team, which is on a two-day visit to the Barak valley held its hearing at the National Institute of Technology. During the hearing in Silchar the JPC met several organisations from Karimganj and Hailakandi districts.
These include the Hailakandi units of Congress, AGP, BJP, AIUDF, KMSS, Bengali Students’ Youth Forum, Assam Tea Tribes Students’ Association and many more. The JPC is meeting organisations from Cachar today at the same venue.
The Bill introduced in the Loksabha in 2016, aims to grant citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians who were persecuted on religious grounds from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
