There are 310 refugees in Parva village, while over 800 displaced people remain in the Bangladesh jungles near the border

Kuki Chin refugees continue to flee Bangladesh and seek refuge in Mizoram, the state in northeast India along the India-Bangladesh-Myanmar border. At least 15 refugees from Chittagong Hill Tracts, belonging to the Kuki-Chin community, entered Mizoram and took shelter in southern Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district on Wednesday, official sources said.
As per official data, the new refugees are among the 100 who have been hiding in the tri-junction of Mizoram, Bangladesh, and Myanmar since being pushed back by BSF personnel on Friday.
Around 90 people, who were pushed back, have been hiding in the jungles inside Bangladesh searching for food, as they had been starving and hid in the jungle without food for days, sources said.
Reportedly, there are 310 refugees in Parva village, while over 800 displaced people remain in the Bangladesh jungles near the border.
Last week, at least 11 refugees from Chittagong Hill Tracts in south-east Bangladesh crossed over to India on December 1 and sought shelter in Kamtuli village near the Mizoram-Bangladesh-Myanmar tri-junction, official sources said. As per official data, 304 Kuki Chins have taken shelter in the bordering villages of Mizoram since November 20, 2022.
The student body urged the Mizoram government to make concerted efforts to ensure the safety of the refugees and help the displaced people enter the state. The exodus of the Kuki-Chin community began after the Bangladesh army personnel attacked Chheihkhiang and nearby villages on November 16, and the first batch of refugees, numbering 272, entered Mizoram and took shelter at Parva village in Lawngtlai district.
On November 23, the Bangladesh Army also attacked Baptlai, Sunsawng, Ruma, and Theihkhiangin Chittagong Hill Tracts, causing a large number of people to flee and seek refuge in the jungles.
The Kuki-Chin community people have been demanding a separate state comprising the areas occupied by the community in the Chittagong Hill Tracts, following which the Kuki-National Army (KNA) was formed to achieve their goals, resulting in armed clashes with the Bangladesh army.
