The Assam Petroleum Mazdoor Union has stopped transporting petroleum products – LPG cylinder, petrol and diesel to Ri Bhoi, Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills districts of Meghalaya, Ramen Das, Union’s general secretary told Northeast Live today.

“Until our members are provided adequate security we are not going to travel to the three disturbed districts of Meghalaya. Our services to Garo Hills will continue,” Das said adding that according to the Union’s estimates the three districts of Ri Bhoi, Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills has LPG stock that should last for about 2-3 days and petrol and diesel stock that should last for at least a week.

The Union had in a letter to HPCL depot in Betkuchi, Guwahati from where the petroleum products are loaded, said that its members are scared to travel to Rebhoi, Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills districts of Meghalaya and without proper security they would not travel to those locations.

“There is an abnormal situation lurking. Our members are afraid to go to the above mentioned areas for supplying Petroleum Products. In this situation, there is a need for safety and security first. Therefore, we have decided not to take any load from today onwards until and unless the Government of Meghalaya assure us safety and security of T/T crews (Oil and Gas), and if any incident occurs Meghalaya Government will take responsibility,” the Union said in the letter.

It may be mentioned here that entry of non-Meghalaya vehicles to Meghalaya remains restricted fearing further violence.
