Assam-Mizoram Border Issue: Mizoram Submits Evidences, Stakes Claim over Disputed Areas

Border issue: Assam and Mizoram governments hold crucial meeting in Guwahati. All important meeting was successful, says Atul Bora.

Assam and Mizoram governments have gone a step ahead in resolving the long pending border issue between both the states. In a crucial meeting held in Guwahati today, a high level delegation of the Mizoram government submitted its evidences and other necessary documents staking claims on the areas which are in dispute with Assam. The Mizoram delegation was led by Home Minister Lalchamliana, while the Assam delegation was led by Border Affairs minister Atul Bora.

Speaking exlcusively to Northeast Live‘s senior desk editor Joydeep Hazarika, Assam Minister for Border Protection and Development, Atul Bora said, “Today’s meeting is really successful. We had asked the Mizoram govt to submit their claims and today they have submitted their claims in details and I am hopeful that this meeting will pave a way for finding out solution to long pending border issue with Mizoram.”

When asked as to why Regional Committees have not been formed yet, Minister Bora said that Regional Committees will be formed by the respective Chief Ministers. Bora highlighted the fact that because of the strong political will of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the process of talks have attained a progressive status. Besides, Atul Bora also added that, “Chief Minister of Mizoram Zoramthanga has shown his sincerity, he is also very positive. We are hopeful that we will able to resolve differences within a short span of time.”

Meanwhile, both the states have jointly agreed on several key points in the meeting held in Guwahati today.

As per the decisions adopted in the meeting, the Mizoram government has agreed to furnish the list of villages, their areas, geo-spatial extent, and ethnicity of the people and other relevant information within 3 months to support their claim which can be examined by setting up Regional Committees from both sides to arrive at an amicable resolution of the vexed border issues.
Both the sides also agreed to abide by the resolutions encapsulated in the Joint Statement of 5th August, 2021 signed in Aizawl.

Besides, both sides agreed to continue their resolve to maintain peace and harmony on the Inter-state border among communities living on both sides with a view to further strengthen their age old ties.

Commenting on the Lailapur incident, Mizoram Home Minister Lalmchamliana opined that the situation could have been handled differently. Lalchamliana also added that both the states are now closely working on confidence building measures.
