Mizoram Stone Quarry Tragedy: 2 More Bodies Found

Two more bodies were found today at the Murdah stone quarry collapse site in Mizoram.

A total of 12 workers were buried alive when after the stone quarry near Maudarh village in south Mizoram’s Hnahthial district, collapsed on top of the workers on Monday evening.

With the two bodies recovered today, 10 bodies have been found so far.

The two bodies have been identified as Shofiqul Islam (26) from Assam and Kahamrai (49) from Mizoram.

Jahidur Islam (27) Assam and Ajoy Chakma from Mizoram (25) are still missing.

Ajay Chakma, a resident of Tlabung village in Lunglei district and Jahidur Islam hails from Assam’s Barpeta district.

Of the 12 people buried, 3 were from Assam – Surajit Roy, Safikul Islam and Jaidul Islam, one from Mizoram, two from Jharkhand and six from West Bengal.

All of them were working as excavator operators at the site. They were employed by Anupam Bricks and Concrete Industries Limited or ABCIL.

The company is engaged in in the construction and widening of National Highway No 54 between Hnahthial town and Zobawk village sector in Mizoram.

Search and rescue operations are on to find the remaining two people feared dead.

Sources said that the workers had dug too deep and disturbed the stone quarry’s stability, resulting in the entire hill coming down on the workers.

The landslip also buried five Hitachi excavators, a big stone crusher and a drilling machine.
