5 killed, 9 injured as oil tanker catches fire in Mizoram’s Aizawl

At least 5 people have been reported dead while 9 others have sustained injuries after a tanker carrying petrol caught on fire near the Tuirial Airfield in Aizawl last evening.

Reportedly, many of those injured or assumed to have been killed were attempting to collect fuel, while others were attempting to put out the fire from the wrecked tanker.

The number of people who sustained injuries and fatalities is still unknown due to the severity of the fire. However, at least nine people have been verified to have received severe burns and have been brought to a hospital.

According to sources, the fire also destroyed three two-wheelers, one taxi, and a house. The death toll is expected to rise as the fire burns out and officials and volunteers assess the situation.

The tanker transporting fuel was involved in an accident near the Tuirial airstrip. The actual source of the fire is not known, however, it is assumed that someone in the crowd gathered around it accidentally ignited a fire as it was getting dark. 

Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga and Sports Minister Robert Romawia Royte also visited the incident.
