Mallikarjun Kharge takes over as Cong president

"Congress will break this system of lies and hatred that is prevailing in the country," Kharge said after taking over as Cong president.

Mallikarjun Kharge today became the first-non gandhi to lead the Congress in 24 years, as he formally took over as the Congress president.

Kharge who was handed over the certificate of election to the Congress top post at the AICC headquarter, said it was an emotional moment for him and expressed his gratitude to the party leaders across the nation.

“I know it is a difficult time, efforts are being made to change democracy established by Congress,” the 80-year-old leader said after taking over as party chief. The Congress will break this system of lies and hatred that is prevailing in the country,” Kharge said during his speech.

Kharge added, “Sonia ji has been our guiding light. She anchored the Congress party through difficult times, through highs and lows, personifying the values of courage, sacrifice, grace and respect. She will always remain our source of strength as the party gears up for the future challenges.”

Addressing the event, Sonia Gandhi expressed her confidence in Kharge to inspire and strengthen the party under his leadership.

Meanwhile, Sonia Gandhi also said it was a “huge responsibility” and that she had tried to “discharge (her) duties with sincerity”.
