Indian student stabbed in Australia; Parents alleges ‘racial attack’

A 28-year-old Indian student, Shubham Garg who is pursuing PhD in mechanical engineering from the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, was brutally attacked with a knife and allegedly stabbed 11 times.

He is currently hospitalised in critical condition. Terming the incident, a “racial” attack, his Agra-based parents said for the past seven days, they’ve been trying to get a visa for Australia, but haven’t been able to secure it.

Shubham completed his Bachelor of Technology and Master of Science degree from IIT Madras and went to Australia on September 1.

According to family members, Shubham suffered multiple wounds on his face, chest, and abdomen.

According to reports, the incident took place on October 6 at about 10:30 pm, as Garg was walking along the Pacific Highway, police informed.

Meanwhile, police have also arrested a 27-year-old suspect identified as Daniel Norwood for attempted murder.

Norwood allegedly approached the victim and demanded cash and his phone. When he refused, the accused stabbed Garg in the abdomen before fleeing the scene.

A local court in Hornsby denied bail to the accused who will remain in custody until December 14, 2022, the next hearing.

Moreover, Indian authorities are in close touch with local authorities in Australia and with the family of the victim.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said, “We’ve knowledge of the incident. As per our information, he’s is in hospital and under treatment. Out High Commission in Canberra and Consulate in Sydney are in touch with local authorities. We’re in contact with the family.”

The Indian mission in Australia is providing consular assistance to Garg, who is in “serious but stable” condition after undergoing surgery at a local hospital.
