Meghalaya: James Sangma backs repealing Regulation of Gaming Act

The state government has taken cognizance of the concerns expressed by different sections of the society. James Sangma backs stakeholders.
Meghalaya minister of Taxation James Sangma today made a significant statement saying that his endeavour would be to completely scrap the Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Act 2021.
Sangma said that he had deliberations with different stakeholders including those from the religious society, NGOs, Civil Society representatives, Dorbar Shnongs, and youth representatives in this regard and decide on the future course of action.
The Taxation minister said that it was in this meeting when it became clear to him that it will be in the best interest of the state to completely scrap the act to avoid further untoward implications.
James Sangma said that earlier too different sections of the society had expressed concerns over the implementation of the act and its impact thereafter. However, the minister maintained that casinos were meant to be set up only for tourists.
Sangma maintained that it will be his earnest endeavour to see that the Meghalaya Regulation of Gaming Act 2021 will be repealed. Meanwhile, the minister has welcomed every stakeholder for their valuable feedback on the issue.
James Sangma further said that citizens are the keystones of any democracy and only strengthens the MDA government in it’s commitment for better governance so that the collective conscience is addressed.
However, the minister said that the government had passed the act with the aim to boost tourism, revenue as well as employment generation.
Notably, the state government recently granted three businesses provisional licenses to build casinos in an effort to increase tourism and revenue. The Church and other social groups opposed the idea, arguing that “legalising gambling” would have a negative moral impact on society.
