The Mishimi community of Arunachal Pradesh, particularly their women folk, is known for their excellent weaving skills. Using their age-old traditional skills, which they inherited from their forefathers, these Mishimi women weave various traditional garments, both for men and women.

Despite the fact that their traditional weaving skills are valued by many, the government has done little to enable these women to make weaving their primary source of income.

North East Live met one such group of women at Watong village in Hawai, the district headquarters of Anjaw district in Arunachal Pradesh, and spoke to them at length about their unique weaving skills. During the interaction, the women folk who have formed a self-help group in order to give a formal shape to their efforts said that they are yet to receive any government guidance or assistance till date.

The women also stated that they have to face immense difficulties in travelling to Tezu, where they get the raw materials, since it is both costly and time-consuming. The women also appealed to the Arunachal state government to provide them with technical guidance and support so that they can produce better garments. This, they said, will enable them to keep their tradition alive as well as generate livelihood among the village women folk which will lead towards strengthening of the rural economy.
