Aimed at sensitizing tourists toward the importance of the endangered Snow Leopard, a statue of the elusive cat was unveiled at Thangu village in North Sikkim, on the occasion of the Pang Lhabsol festival.

The statue of the Snow Leopard was unveiled as a part of an initiative to spread awareness of the endangered cat found in North Sikkim and the Tibetan highlands.

The statue also aims at sensitizing tourists about the importance of the rare animal and the significance of the Thangu and Gurudongmar areas as snow leopard habitats.

Known to locals as Saagey, the snow leopard is a focal species for the Secure Himalaya project.

The statue was unveiled under the Global Environment Facility-Government of India under United Nations Development Project’s Secure Himalaya initiative and was constructed in collaboration with Lachen Tourism Development Committee and the Lachen Dzumsa.

It was unveiled in the presence of Lachen Pipons along with field officials of Kanchenjunga National Park and Forest officials under Mangan territorial divisions.

Monks from the Thangu monastery performed rituals during the unveiling.

Moreover, 20 Dokpas or yak herders were given jackets, high quality boots, and solar lights with mobile charging capability by Lachen Pipons and members of Lachen Dzumsa.
