Vice President Venkaiah Naidu on his visit to Guwahati during the launch of Assam Government’s Atal Amrit Abhiyan, touched on the critical issue of crime against women facing the country and said men have to change their mindset as the Indian society had tremendous respect for women in the past. He also said there is an urgent need for stringent laws adding that mere introduction of bills will not address the rising menace.
The Vice President said doctors must work in the villages for at least a year before they get postings at hospitals located in urban areas. He also said the infant mortality rate in Assam was 44 out of 1000 as compared to 37 out of 1000 overall nationally.
He also exhorted the people to lead a healthy life and urged Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal to make physical exercise mandatory in schools. A healthy India will lead to a wealthy India, he said.

Naidu was inaugurating the Assam Government’s Atal Amrit Abhiyan scheme in Guwahati, describing the scheme as a unique programme, the Vice President said 63 million or 7 percent of India’s population lives below the poverty line and this has to come down.
