The lawn bowls women’s team created history on Monday by assuring the first-ever Lawn-bowl medal at Commonwealth Games by defeating Norfolk Island and cruising to the semi-finals.
The four-women team comprising Assam girl Nayanmoni Saikia, Lovely Choubey, Rupa Rani Tirkey, and Pinki defeated New Zealand 16-13. The quartet started strong from the word go and raced to an 11-0 lead.
What is interesting to note here is that, 33-year-old Nayanmoni Saikia, who hails from Assam’s Sarupathar, has become the first woman and second person from the state to win a medal at the commonwealth games after Jayanta Talukdar.
The team will take on South Africa today around 4:15 pm.
