The Chakma Hajong Rights Alliance along with the Arunachal Pradesh Chakma Students Union and the Arunachal Pradesh Chakma Hajong Students’ Association other Chakma bodies in the state have urged the All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU) to call off the proposed bandh on August 3 demanding cancellation of residence certificates issued to the Chakmas and Hajongs in Changlang.

“The issuance of residence certificate to the Chakmas and Hajongs is absolutely legal. Under the Finance Act of 2020, any person staying in India for an aggregate period of 120 days or more is an ordinarily resident, CHRA spokesperson Krishna Chakma said.

It may be mentioned that the AAPSU has opposed the issuance of Residential Proof Certificates to the Chakma Hajong community in Changlang and has also filed cases against DC Changlang and EAC Diyun circle.

Earlier on July 19, The Chakma Rights and Development Organisation (CRDO) slammed the ultimatum issued by the AAPSU to the Pema Khandu-led state government to revoke Residential Proof Certificates or RPCs allegedly given to members of the Chakma Hajong community in Arunachal’s Changlang district.

In a press statement, the CRDO labeled the allegations by AAPSU on the Chakma-Hajong community as ‘wild and unwarranted’ and claimed that Chakmas and Hajongs have been natives of the land long before Arunachal Pradesh as a state was born.
