Just within a month of assuming office as the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma has landed into a major controversy. Sangma’s opinion of issuing work permits to Bangladeshi’s has drawn wide spread condemnations across the State.
Sangma said that talks are on with the Centre on work permit system for those implemented in Australia, UK and the United States to help built improved economic ties of the North East with the neighboring countries.
During a meeting with the External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in New Delhi, Sangma mentioned that as Meghalaya shares 444 kms of border with Bangladesh, the state government is very keen to implement the Act South policy to ensure that the state receives the maximum economic benefits. Although infiltration and illegal immigration is an issue that needs to be addressed, a mechanism to address the economic relationship with Bangladesh is needed.
