The hijab debate in Karnataka is becoming more heated by the day, with protests taking place in schools across the state, as well as in other areas of the country.
It’s worth noting that the incident started last month at the Government Females PU College in Karnataka’s Udupi district, when six students claimed they were excluded from classes for wearing headscarves, prompting numerous Muslim girls to follow suit. The protests then expanded to other colleges in Udupi, as well as neighbouring cities like Mandya and Shivamogga.
Meanwhile, all eyes are on the Karnataka High Court today, where the petition will be heard at 2:30 p.m. by a single bench led by Justice Krishna S Dixit.

As the hijab row erupted in parts of the state yesterday, Justice Krishna S Dixit urged students and the public to keep the peace while deferring the judgment until today.
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj S Bommai had earlier stated that schools and colleges in the state will be closed from today since the state government has declared a three-day holiday for institutes due to the hijab dilemma. This three-day holiday, which runs from February 9 to 11, applies to all government, aided, and unaided degree, diploma, and engineering institutes.
Meanwhile, Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai reacted to the hijab-saffron shawl dispute in Karnataka on Twitter on February 9. ‘Refusing to allow girls to go to school in their hijabs is horrible,’ said the girls’ education activist.
