Fresh tension has erupted on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. Locals from Arunachal Pradesh have gathered at the disputed site and have blocked any further entry into their state after the incident of firing at Hime Basti village in the Ming-mang area.

Locals from Arunachal Pradesh along with police personnel have laid a blockade in the area while not letting anyone from Assam enter. This comes after alleged firing took place from the Arunachal side by unknown miscreants on people from Assam.

Reportedly, a row erupted in the area on Tuesday over the construction of a road by the authorities from Arunachal Pradesh. The road was being constructed linking Likabali and Durpai under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana.

Reportedly, Assam Police personnel reached the spot and stopped the construction, terming it an illegal act within Assam’s territory, and also burnt down the culvert that was constructed.

Following this, yesterday, the incident of firing happened. Meanwhile, a large number of people from the Assam side have come out in protest against the firing incident. Most of the locals were also present when the Assam Police team stopped the construction of the road. Many of the protestors also alleged that they had a narrow escape when the firing happened.

Interestingly, this latest incident of tension at the Assam-Arunachal border comes just a few days after Chief Ministers from both states met in Guwahati. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu met in Guwahati on Monday evening.

The main focus of the meeting was resolving the long pending border row between the two states. CM Sarma had announced after the meeting that both sides would conduct a ground-level survey on the boundary status so as to reach a permanent solution on the matter.
