Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has welcomed the United Liberation Front of Assam or ULFA-Independent (ULFA-I)’s decision to abstain from boycotting the Republic Day celebrations.
Taking to Twitter, CM Sarma wrote, “I welcome ULFA’s decision not to call a bandh and desist from any resistance during Republic Day. I take this opportunity to once again appeal to Shri Paresh Baruah to come forward for a meaningful discussion with Govt of India.”
It may be mentioned that in a big move on Sunday, ULFA-Ihas announced that it will not be declaring any bandh calls on Republic Day, 2022.
Not just this, the outfit has also stated that it would not engage in armed protests on January 26.

This was informed through a communique by ULFA-I commander-in-chief Paresh Baruah.
Baruah said the decision has been taken in consideration with the current Covid-19 scenario in the state.
It is to be noted that ULFA-I had refrained from issuing any bandh or boycott call during August 15 last year too.
The outlawed outfit has declared a ceasefire from May 15, 2021, which is being renewed at regular intervals. In the meantime, Indian authorities have stepped back from conducting any operations against ULFA-I.
