Well, Assam and Meghalaya are on the brink of resolving the lingering issue. Following a crucial meeting between the Chief Ministers of both the states in Guwahati today, ministers from both states informed that a final agreement on the majority of the 6 areas of dispute taken up in the first phase will be reached before January 21st which is the 50th statehood day of Meghalaya.

Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and Assam Border areas development minister Atul Bora informed Northeast Live that chief ministers of both states will meet once again in the next 4-5 days and also call on Union Home Minister Amit Shah before the final agreement.

This was the 4th meeting of the CMs on the issue and lasted for around 45 minutes. Chairpersons of all regional committees from Assam and Meghalaya also attended the meet. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad Sangma chaired the meeting at the state guest house, Koinadhora in Guwahati.

Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong and Home Minister Lakhmen Rymbui among others were present from the Meghalaya side. From Assam, ministers Atul Bora and Chandramohan Patowary besides others attended the meet. 

Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live after the meet, Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong termed the session as extremely productive and expressed confidence that a final agreement will be reached at before January 21st. 

Assam border areas development minister Atul Bora also said that things are on track for a breakthrough before January 21st.

It may be mentioned that of the 12 areas of differences Assam and Meghalaya are looking to resolve 6 areas of dispute in the first phase. It is being hoped that a final agreement will be reached at in the majority of the 6 areas of dispute before January 21st.
