Hailstorm hits Shillong & parts of Meghalaya ahead of X-mas, gives city ‘Snowy’ look

The People of Shillong and adjacent areas were greeted today with a sudden hailstorm after heavy showers this morning turned the city into a winter wonderland.

A heavy Hail storm is being reported from all over the state including places like Nongspung, Upper Shillong and several areas of Ri-bhoi district amongst others.

Heavy traffic was also witnessed because of the hailstorm causing much inconvenience to commuters.

It may be mentioned that the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday predicted light to moderate rainfall and snowfall over the Western Himalayan region from 22 to 25 December.

The department has also predicted rainfall with thunderstorms over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura from 21 to 24 December.

Residents of Shillong took to social media to share pictures of their surroundings covered in white which were completely covered by hailstones.

The showers and the heavy hailstorms have brought down temperatures in the city. With the state already revelling in Yuletide spirits, the hailstorm has made it is a ‘White’ Pre-Christmas for Shillong and Meghalaya.
