The Centre has stepped up efforts to resolve the inter-state border disputes in the Northeast. Union Home Minister today held a meeting with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Arunachal CM Pema Khandu on the border issue. Speaking to media persons after the crucial meet Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma termed the discussion as positive. Sarma also informed that he will meet CM Khandu once again in January to work out a solution to the inter-state border issue.

The meeting between the 2 CMs came at a time when fresh escalations have been witnessed along the inter-state border between the states. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is hopeful that the dispute with Arunachal can be resolved at the earliest.

Assam & Meghalaya border issue: CMs meeting tomorrow : 

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will meet his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad Sangma in Guwahati tomorrow to discuss the reports submitted by the Regional committees.

Out of the 12 areas of dispute, the 2 states are trying to resolve differences in 6 less complicated areas. So far as many as 2 regional committees in Meghalaya have submitted their reports to the government while the third has been asked to submit the report without further delay.

It may be mentioned that Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma had recently held a mega consultative meet with pressure groups and MDCs of district councils to take their feedback on the inter-state border issue. Members of top pressure groups like the KSU, COMSO, HYC among others took part in the crucial consultative meet. The discussions were held as part of the Meghalaya Government’s initiative to take feedback from all stakeholders before the Chief Ministers of Assam and Meghalaya resolve the dispute in at least 6 of the areas of difference.

Meanwhile, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said that he was hopeful of resolving the interstate border disputes with Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya. Sarma, however, added that there is a slight challenge in resolving the border rows with Mizoram and Nagaland.
