Mizoram Excise Minister Dr. K. Beichhua today said that drugs and alcohol should be fought on a war footing as their impact on the Mizo society is severe.
The minister today destroyed Rs. 2 crores worth of different types of drugs seized by the state excise and narcotics department.
Speaking on the occasion, Beichhua said efforts should be made on a war footing to combat drugs and alcohol in the state.
The combat against drugs and alcohol should not be entrusted only to the excise department but the people as a whole have a collective responsibility to fight it on a war footing, he said.
Beichhua lauded the excise department for its efforts to combat drugs and alcohol despite manpower crunch and poor facilities.
It may be mentioned 8 kilograms of heroin, 2,484 tablets of methamphetamine, 1,694 tablets of Alprazolam, and 237 kilograms of cannabis were among the drugs confined to flames today.
According to excise department officials, over 1,600 people have died due to drug abuse from 1984 till November this year.
During the last three years between 2019 and October 2021, a total of 39.72 kilograms of heroin has been seized by the excise department.
