Nagaland is celebrating its 59th Statehood Day today. A state-level function commemorating the occasion was held at Nagaland Civil Secretariat Plaza, Kohima.

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio wished the people of the state on the occasion of the 59th Statehood Day, remembering the sacrifices of the state’s leaders who ensured its creation as the 16th state of the country.

Taking to Twitter Chief Minister Rio tweeted “Greeting to the people of Nagaland on our 59th Statehood Day, we celebrate this historic day remembering all those who worked to ensure the establishment of Nagaland as the 16th state of the Indian Union. Let us work together towards genuine peace, oneness and progressive change”

59th Statehood Day of Nagaland

Nagaland was formally recognised as a separate state on December 1, 1963, with Kohima being declared it’s capital.

Before this, Naga leaders and the central government reached an agreement to create a separate region of the Naga Hills in 1957.

The State of Nagaland Act, 1962, was enacted by the Parliament to give Nagaland statehood.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and others took to the microblogging site Twitter and greeted the people of the state on the occasion.

The Chief Minister also launched National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy (NIPUN Bharat) Mission in the state which aims that every child has learn reading, writing, and numeracy.
