Tawang hydel plant incurs severe damage as heavy rain washes away penstock pipes

Flash floods triggered by incessant rain washed away at least three rows of penstock pipes from the Shaikang Chhu Micro Hydel Electric Project under Mogto circle in Tawang on Tuesday.

The Megawatt hydel project, which is the backbone of regular power supply to Tawang district was severely damaged today due to the heavy rainfall.

Following the major damage, Tawang might face a shortage of power supply, since the power generated by other small hydels will not be able to generate the required 6.5 megawatt power supply in the district during summer and 8.5 megawatt during winter.

Meanwhile, taking stock of the situation, Tawang Deputy Commissioner, Sang Phuntsok, along with Executive Engineer of Department of Hydro Power Development Lhou Division Lama Tsering, Executive Engineer of Electrical Tawang Sang Dorjee, Circle Officer of Mogto circle Dorjee Wangchu and other officers visited the site and assessed the damage.

As per reports, a part of Border Roads Organisation (BRO) road connecting Gongkhar from Mogto circle headquarters has also been disrupted.
