Former India Boxer and Asian Games gold-medalist Dingko Singh passed away at around 4 AM on Thursday at a private hospital in Imphal. The veteran boxer was battling with liver cancer and succumbed to the illness, he was 42.

Earlier last year, during the Covid pandemic, Dingko went to Delhi for treatment, upon returning he contacted Coronavirus, but recovered later.

A recipient of Arjuna and Padma Shri awards, he was one of the most outstanding boxers ever produced in the vountry. As per Union Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju, Dinko’s Gold Medal at the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games sparked the Boxing chain reaction in India.

Rijiju condoled the demise of Dingko and credited the boxer for sparking a craze for the sport in India.

“I’m deeply saddened by the demise of Shri Dingko Singh. One of the finest boxers India has ever produced, Dinko’s gold medal at 1998 Bangkok Asian Games sparked the Boxing chain reaction in India. I extend my sincere condolences to the bereaved family. RIP Dinko,” Rijiju tweeted.

Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh also expressed his grief over the demise of the star pugilist and extended his condolences to the bereaved family.

“I’m shocked and deeply saddened by the demise of Shri N Dingko Singh earlier in the morning today. A Padma Shri awardee, Dingko Singh was one of the most outstanding boxers Manipur has ever produced. My sincere condolences to the bereaved family. May his soul rest in peace,” Singh tweeted.

His last rites will be performed at his birth place Sekta in Lamlai, situated at the outskirt of Imphal East.
