Leaders from various political parties and citizens paid their last respects to the mortal remains of former Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi at his Guwahati residence earlier on Tuesday morning.
Later, the body was taken to Rajiv Bhawan in GS road to allow Congress party members to pay their last respects.
From Rajiv Bhawan, the former Chief Minister will then be shifted to Srimanta Shankardeva Kalakshetra at 4 PM where his remains will be kept till November 25.
The last rites of the former Chief Minister will be performed in Guwahati on November 26 with full state honours, informed Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora.
“As per family’s wish, Gogoi’s body will also be kept at the Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra to allow all people to pay their last respect to the senior leader” Bora said.
Then, on November 26, the final journey of the departed leader will begin in the morning. “As per Gogoi’s own wish during his lifetime, the body will be first taken to one temple, one mosque, one church and one gurdwara, before the cremation,” Ripun Bora said.
Meanwhile, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has announced three-day State mourning in honour of the former Chief Minister. Sonowal paid his last respects to the veteran politician at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital on Monday.
Talking to media persons, Sonowal said, “With the death of former CM Tarun Gogoi, the state has lost a great leader. He set high moral standards with his selfless service to the people. I feel like losing a father at his death.”
