Meghalaya Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Mukul Sangma has said that the ULFA is trying to reorganise and regroup small and dormant militant groups of the hill state.
Indicating to the reports of ULFA leader Dristi Rajkhowa’s presence in the Garo Hills region, Sangma said that an ULFA leader, who is well acquainted with the terrain of Garo Hills, has been trying to reach out to members of dormant and small militant groups in the State and re-organise them.
Recently, reports circulated that a heavy gun battle took place between ULFA leader Drishti Rajkhowa and Meghalaya police in South Garo Hills. However, Rajkhowa reportedly managed to escape from the site.
Slamming the MDA Government in Meghalaya for allegedly letting its guard down, Mukul Sangma said that movement of rebels have been witnessed at several locations of the State.
The senior Congress leader also said that Garo Hills and parts of West Khasi Hills have always been looked upon by the insurgent groups as a safe heaven.
Sangma also criticised the Government for limiting the role of State Police’s Special Force 10 Unit’s saying that a notification has been issued to the SF-10 indicating that any personnel willing to leave the unit may leave.
The senior Congress leader further said that the youths of the State today are living with a sense of despair which is making them vulnerable. Mukul Sangma said that development in the Northeast has been slow due to a long history of militancy in the region.
Notably, the Meghalaya Government has asserted that the State’s police force jointly with the Central security forces is ensuring that no militant outfit use the State as a heaven for nefarious or anti-national activity.
