Manipur HC declares election of Kakching AC null and void; BJP’s M Rameshwor is new MLA

The Manipur High Court on Thursday declared the election of Kakching Assembly Constituency of the 11th Manipur Legislative Assembly as null and void.
Following the HC order, BJP’s M Rameshwor who was placed second during the 2017 assembly election, will be the new MLA of Kakching Assembly Constituency.
Y Surchandra who contested the election as Congress candidate was declared the MLA after winning the seat with 11,133 votes.
Surchandra has been disqualified for violation of the 10th Schedule of the Indian Constitution after he left Congress and joined the BJP along with 6 others.
BJP candidate M Rameshwor, who is declared as the new MLA, filed a petition in April 2017 against the then Congress MLA Y Surchandra against failure to provide financial assets and property in the election affidavit.
According to Counsel Pebam Ajoy of M Rameshwor, Cong MLA Y Surcharchandra failed to disclose important information on his election affidavit and the litigation has been in place after the election.
It may be mentioned that Y Surchandra, earlier extended support to BJP after winning from Congress ticket from Kakching AC.
