The Oil India authorities have finally bowed down to the pressure from the local villagers of Baghjan, who had been protesting and demanding compensation due to gas blowout in the Baghjan oilfields.
Oil exploration major, Oil India Limited (OIL) has decided to give a compensation of Rs. 30,000 to each family affected due to the massive gas blow out at Well No. 5 at Baghjan oilfields near Doomdooma in eastern Assam’s Tinsukia district.
This was decided after a tripartite meeting between representatives from the villagers led by Baghjan Gaon Milan Jyoti Yuva Sangha, Tinsukia district administration and senior officials of Oil India Limited.
OIL has informed that all necessary clearance related to COVID-19 has been obtained from the Singapore government and a chartered plane carrying three experts will arrive in Guwahati tomorrow and from there they will be immediately taken to the site.
The 3 member of the team are senior Oil Control Operations and Team Leader – Michael Ernest Allcorn, senior Well Control Engineer – Craig Neil Duncan and senior Oil Control specialist – Edward Harris MacLeod.
It might be mentioned that the local villagers had complained about low standard facilities and non-payment of any compensation to the affected villagers.
The blowout began on May 27 from the well in Tinsukia district from which gas was flowing out for the ninth day on Friday. The gas well at Baghjan, is located close to the Dibru Saikhowa National Park, known for its feral horses.
Meanwhile, the OIL said the arrival of three experts from the Singapore-based Alert Disaster Control has been delayed due to formalities related to COVID-19 pandemic.
