As many as 1,615 rebels of different factions of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) on Thursday laid down their arms at a ceremony in Guwahati.
The ceremony was held in presence of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, state health and finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Joint Secretary for Northeast (MHA) Satyendra Garg, DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta and other dignitaries.
NDFB (P) President Gobindo Basumatary, NDFB leader Dhiren Boro, NDFB (S) president B Saoraigwra and NDFB (R) Chairman Ranjan Daimary also handed over their arms to Chief Minister Sonowal and health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. A total of 178 weapons were laid down.
Prior to this, around 644 militants from various militant outfits laid down their arms in a surrender ceremony prior to the signing of the Bod Peace Accord.
Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal addressed the NDFB leaders and said that the recently signed NDFB peace pact will bring in lasting peace in Assam.
Health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also addressed the gathering and said that the NDFB’s decision to return to the mainstream as a historic move.
