Union Home Minister Amit Shah and representatives of Bru refugees have signed an agreement to end the over two decade old crisis of Bru refugees who fled Mizoram and took shelter in Tripura back in the year 1997.

The Agreement was signed in presence of Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb and Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga.

During a crucial meeting in Delhi, Shah announced a Rs 600 crore rehabilitation package for the Bru refugees.

The meeting was attended by representatives of Bru organisations, chief ministers of both Mizoram and Tripura, royal scion Pradyot Deb Barman, top BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma and others.

Meanwhile, Shah also informed that the Bru refugees will get a 40 by 30 feet plot of land along with a fixed deposit of Rs 4 lakh and a cash assistance of Rs 5,000 per month for 2 years besides free ration.

It may be mentioned that in the last 10 years, the Centre has made over nine attempts to repatriate the Bru refugees to Mizoram but to no avail.

The Brus have been firm on their stand that unless proper security and rehabilitation is provided they would not be willing to move back to Mizoram.
