People across Assam have geared up to celebrate ‘Uruka’ today, prior to the eve of Bhogali Bihu, the harvesting festival on Wednesday.

Markets in the state witnesses heavy rush of customers since early morning, doing their last round shopping for food items and delicacies that will add flavours to the Bihu festivities. The markets are filled with different kinds of fish with different price range.

As part of tradition, fish is seen as the most sought after item for feasting on ‘Uruka’ night among the Assamese households. People thronged fish markets in large numbers across the state vying to buy some of the favourite and largest fishes available in the market.

Fish markets all over the state are witnessing a massive upward trend. A 30 kg fish was sold for a whopping 45,000 rupees at the Ganeshguri fish market in Guwahati.

While, Catla fish on an average is being sold for Rs 1200 to Rs 1400 per kg, the Chitala fish, which is considered a Bhogali Bihu specialty, is being sold at no less than Rs 1500 per kg.

Meanwhile, on this particular day, a large number of people are seen indulging in community fishing in various ponds, lakes and rivers across the state.

Meji Ghar’s or makeshift huts made out of straw, bamboo and leaves are constructed to mark the celebration of ‘Uruka’, where Bihu-revelers spend the Uruka night merrymaking, before ceremonially setting it on flames the next morning on the day of Bhogali Bihu.

In various parts of Assam, placards opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act are also being placed in some of the Meji Ghar’s, which will be consigned to flames early morning tomorrow.
