After the conclusion of the three-day long mass ‘Satyagraha’ by the All Assam Students Union (AASU) on Wednesday, the artistes and celebrities of Assam are carrying forward the tirade against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act on Thursday.

A day long mass protest is being held by celebrities and artistes at the Assam Engineering Institute (AEI) playground in Guwahati’s Chandmari locality.

Singers, actors, filmmakers, student union leaders, including AASU chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya, president Dipanka Kumar Nath, general secretary Lurin Jyoti Gogoi, AJYCP general secretary Palash Changmai, heartthrob Zubeen Garg along with residents of Guwahati joined the ‘Shilpir Gana Abasthan’ as they vowed to oppose the Act.

The protest, which began from 11 am today is being spearheaded by heartthrob Zubeen Garg and is being supported by the AASU.

It needs to be mentioned that AASU has been leading the democratic protests in the state capital against the amended Citizenship Act consecutively for the past three days.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to stay the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019. The apex court issued a notice to Centre on a batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the amended Citizenship Act and fixed the next date of hearing on January 22, 2020.

Meanwhile, with protests intensifying across the country, Congress leaders of Assam, including APCC President Ripun Bora, Congress Legislature Party leader Debabrat Saikia, MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi are staging a sit in protest at the Jantar Mantar in New Delhi opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act.
