The final NRC will be published before noon on August 31 with an estimated 70 thousand personnel engaged in the 15 hundred crore mega exercise giving finishing touches to the citizens list.

The Assam Government on its part has gone out of its way to remove apprehensions among people by stating clearly in a notification that those, whose names do not appear in the list will not be detained under any circumstances.

The State Government notice signed by Additional Chief Secretary (Home), Kumar Sanjay Krishna, said only Tribunals can decide whether a person is a foreigner.

The Centre has already extended the time limit for filing appeals by the people left out of the NRC to 120 days.

Meanwhile, two major political parties in Assam – the ruling BJP and opposition Congress, has said they would extend legal aid to those genuine citizens, who may need to prove their citizenship.

There is quite a bit of surprise in political circles over Assam BJP President Ranjit Dass’ remarks that the party could move the Parliament or the State Assembly to come up with legislations if needed to protect the interests of genuine citizens.

Dass also expressed dissatisfaction at the NRC Update exercise and feared it might contain names of foreigners and could therefore be an incorrect list.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened across Assam to thwart any untoward incident post NRC publication on August 31 and maintain law and order.
