More than 200 refugees from Myanmar’s Rakhine state have been sent back to their country from Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district.
The repatriation was conducted under the supervision of Lawngltai Deputy Commissioner Shashanka Ala, state police and Assam Rifles in accordance with the direction of the Union Home Ministry.
A total of 219 refugees were sent back from Lawngtlai in Mizoram to the border pillar by Maruti Gypsy vehicles and on foot amid tight security. The border was sealed off after the refugees entered Myanmar’s territory.
Meanwhile, Lawngtlai district DC said that the Myanmar authorities have promised to provide boats to take the refugees back through the Sekulh Lui river as per a flag meeting that was held on June 30.
The officials also said that 54 houses of Hmawngbuchhuah village, belonging to the refugees, were dismantled by the village council and volunteers of the Young Lai Association .
Fleeing the arms conflict between Myanmar army and Rakhine based militants, more than 1700 refugees from Paletwa and neighbouring villages in Rakhine state had entered Mizoram during November in 2017.
