Assam-Meghalaya Border: Elephant Meat Seized, Two Arrested

First Published: 26th March, 2025 17:25 IST

Elephant Meat Seized: The accused were apprehended in Topatoli, Sonapur, Assam’s Kamrup (Metropolitan), along with two country-made rifles.

Amid rising concerns over wildlife conservation, Meghalaya Police has seized a large quantity of elephant meat from two individuals near the Assam-Meghalaya border.

The accused were apprehended in Topatoli, Sonapur, Assam’s Kamrup (Metropolitan) district, along with two country-made rifles.

Meanwhile, the Assam Forest Department is investigating the death of an elephant at Dikchak under the Sonapur forest division.

Authorities suspect that the arrested individuals may be responsible for the killing. As a result, the Assam Forest Department has sought their custody for further interrogation.

However, the investigation appears to have hit a roadblock, as Meghalaya Police has yet to transfer the accused to Assam’s custody. This delay has raised concerns over jurisdictional coordination between the two states.

Meanwhile, conservationists urge strict action against elephant poaching, emphasising the need for stronger enforcement of wildlife protection laws.
